To complete this assignment, you must choose a short, argumentative article, either from the course syllabus or your own research, and write an essay that analyzes the author’s rhetoric in detail. Your job, in other words, is to judge the writing, not discuss the topic. (See Lunsford 137 for more on the definition of a rhetorical analysis.)
Choose an article on a topic that you care about. I recommend searching the New York Times Opinion section for short articles. You may also use any argumentative article assigned in class as long as you did not write about it on the last assignment.
Early in your paper, give readers a brief summary of your article, including some context about the author and a short explanation of why their article matters
In the body of your paper, name and analyze at least four significant rhetorical tools that the author uses. You can focus on anything you think is important, but here are some suggestions:
For any argument, you can explain the author’s main claim, any smaller claims, and the reasons and evidence that support them
Students often choose to discuss emotional appeals, and/or the author’s authority, credibility, purpose, and context
To conclude the paper, evaluate how well the author has used their rhetorical tools–did they do a good job making their point? Why/why not?
