Throughout the dystopian lit unit, you’ve read at least one novel and one short story based in different dystopian societies. In the meantime, we’ve covered various elements of these societies, as well as their basis in real life today, showing how dystopian literature serves as a warning of what could be if our own society is not careful.
For this assignment, consider the aspects of dystopias that stand out most to you as problematic or indicative of societal decline. Think about the various phases or levels of severity each of these aspects may progress through before a society becomes a full-fledged dystopia, and ask yourself, “When should one act?” At what point does someone need to take action to prevent society from devolving into a dystopia, and what action(s) should they take? Pull examples from the books, stories, examples from history, and more we’ve read or discussed, as well as your own independent research, to illustrate and support your points.
Your essay must be five paragraphs long in correct MLA format and utilize at least three (3) sources. (The materials we looked at in class can count toward this so long as you cite them properly.)
Your grade will be broken down by the following criteria:
Content and Ideas (40 pts.)—Make sure to clearly explain the concept of dystopias and dystopian literature, as well as your ideas around what risk we face of falling into a dystopia and when and how to prevent it. You will need to include two quotes per paragraph, and each of your sources (three or more) must be directly quoted at least once, though your quotes should not make up more of your essay than your own writing. Missing sources from the required minimum will result in points deducted from this category.
Length and Organization (40 pts.)—Be sure that your five paragraphs are broken up logically and that your transitions are smooth and sensible. Your intro paragraph should give an overview of dystopias before your body paragraphs go into your specific thoughts on them and examples from your reading, and your conclusion should sensibly tie your thoughts together at the end. Remember to express your thoughts concisely as well as expressing them meaningfully, so don’t add unnecessary words just because you think a longer paper means a better grade—it doesn’t! Your MLA formatting and work cited page/bibliography also count towards this grade. Having no work cited page or bibliography will automatically result in a significant deduction from this category.
Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (20 pts.)—As with any English class, you will be graded on using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Make sure to thoroughly check for and correct any issues with these before submitting.
