This week we looked at the work of Edward Weston, Timothy O’Sullivan, and Paul Caponigro.
You will write a Visual Analysis of one landscape image from one of the above artists.
With your chosen image, paste a copy of that image into Word Document and below it, credit its source (URL), and write your analysis (250-350 words).
Step One: Observe
First, just look at the photo. Don’t rush your viewing. Try to spend at least a few minutes looking at it closely–without judgement–to notice the parts. Think of these questions to help guide your observation:
Describe what you see. • What do you notice first? • What people and objects are shown? • How are they arranged? • What is the physical setting? • What, if any, words do you see? • What other details can you see?
Step Two: Reflect
Then, generate and test hypotheses.
Why do you think this image was made? • What’s happening in the image? • Who do you think was the audience for this image? • What tools were used to create it? • What can you learn from examining this image? • Is it clear that this is a contemporary photograph? How do you know? Could it transcend context?
Step Three: Question
To conclude, ask questions that lead to more observations and reflections.
What do you wonder about… who? • what? • when? • where? • why? • how?
Although you need to show you have followed the list of steps, no need to list them in order in your response. Rather, integrate ideas from each into your post.
