This multi-part assignment is designed for you to research the emissions scandal at Volkswagen from an operations management perspective.
You have been retained as a group of management consultants in order to help Volkswagen regain customer goodwill and sales within the marketplace after learning that VW had knowingly manipulated and cheated in their diesel emissions testing. This scandal has become known as Dieselgate or Emissionsgate, where VW cars were being sold that had a small piece of software embedded within it that could detect when their emissions were being tested and change the performance accordingly to improve results.
After initially denying any wrongdoing, VW has admitted this practice has been going on for years along with a finding that about 11 million cars worldwide have this defeat device installed. Many employees and executives—to this day no one knows how many—knew exactly what they were doing and why. In a December, 2015 article in the BBC News, it was reported that about 500k cars in the U.S. will be recalled, along with approximately 8.5 million in Europe, 2.4 million in Germany, and 1.2 million in the U.K.
The consequences make it one of the costliest business scandals ever. To date, VW has paid $37.56 billion in fines, penalties, and compensation to customers. The automaker’s shares have also fallen and remain 35% below its pre-scandal price even while the overall market has grown substantially. Ousted CEO Martin Winterkorn is facing trial on charges of defrauding customers and at least 25 VW employees have been charged in the U.S. and Germany to date. Another 30,000 employees worldwide were let go as VW overhauled operations.
Create a detailed Project Plan, with a Gantt chart outlining the project. The plan will clearly and thoroughly delineate the key components of the project and serve as the guiding document for how the group will manage the project. Groups may use Microsoft Project, SmartDraw, or similar tool that allows the creation of GANTT charts. A useful site that discusses Gantt charts is here: http://www.gantt.com/
