Critically examine Laurie Calhoun’s claim (in her essay “The Terrorist’s Tacit Message,” in James E. White, ed., Contemporary Moral Problems; Wadworth, 2003) that “just war theory” is like a gun for hire available to everyone, Osama Bin Laden as well as Bush.” Are there moral theories that coincide with her perspectives? Please, discuss. Do you find her arguments morally convincing? Why and/or why not? Provide objections and replies to your position(s).

Evidence of consultation of material outside of the assigned ones, class lectures, and class discussions
For each day the paper is late, you will be marked down 2/3 of a letter grade. Papers sent on time, by email, will be marked down 1/3 of a letter grade.
Checklist for Your Written Assignment
___ There is an introduction that sets up the issues and explains what is going to be discussed/explained/argued for in the paper.
___ There is a specific thesis (the statement that encompasses your arguments) provided early in the paper. From the thesis, one should be able to predict what the paper is going to be about and how you are going to argue for your position(s).
___ Make sure you use the ideas from the main texts to support your claims. Cite and engage the texts when appropriate.
___ Make sure to entertain objections (real or imagined) and replies to your main arguments.
___ Check to make sure that the conclusion (s) follows from the entire paper. The conclusion should be consistent with the entire paper and may point to a way forward.
___ In general, remember that simplicity is better. Do not overcomplicate or use more words when fewer will do.
