This is a totally optional, extra credit assignment.
Step 1: Read & Review
Read this assignment thoroughly first. It requires you to take plan ahead take action.
Review your previous homework “Risk Tolerance & Management Assignment” (due March 4) AND the Risk and 10 Sails you wrote about in the March 6 Class Notes.
Step 2: Commit to a Risk you want to Stretch.
Decide which type of risk you want to stretch. It may be the same one you identified in your homework and/or during class on March 6 and/or your March 25 assignment, or it can be a different one from your Risk-o-Meter.
Step 3: Brainstorm 10 Action Steps you could take to create a “Sail”
You might already have some action step ideas listed under the “10 Sails” column from the March 6 class notes and/or your March 25 assignment. Add to them! Some of your action steps might seem very logical, others silly. That’s okay. Write down these action step possibilities.
Step 4: Choose one Action Step you will try to create a “Sail”
Look at the 10 action steps you brainstormed. Choose one. Key guidelines are:
It shoud be something different than you did for your March 25 assignment. (Not sure what I mean? Please ask me.)
The action step should be a new activity for you (don’t use something you did 3 weeks ago)
The activity/step should genuinely give you a chance to stretch your risk
It’s okay to team up with someone else in the class, but you should submit your own assignment.
Step 5: Stretch your risk tolerance and do your Action Step.
Step 6: Write about it.
In 400-500 words answer the following questions:
Background:
Which Risk did you choose to stretch? Why did you choose it?
What were the 10 Action Steps you brainstormed? (Just list them.)
Which Action Step did you choose? Why?
Your Action Step
Describe the Action Step in detail. For example, if you went to something (like a new student club)….Which one? When/where was it? What was it like? How many people were there? What was the vibe? Or perhaps you spent time in an activity that was new for you?
Describe what you actually did to stretch yourself. For example, did you talk to someone new? Ask a question? Apply for something? Spend time trying to read something that was difficult?
Was there anything you were hoping would happen by trying this Action Step?
Did anything feel uncertain or risky about trying this? How did you work through this? (You can refer to some of the strategies you’ve read about in Perusall.)
How did it go? Was it as you expected?
What are 5 observations and/or lessons learned from the process?
