This is a research paper of 7-9 pages. For this assignment you must compose a thesis-driven, written evaluation of the research you performed on a topic of your choice, comprised of
a formal, scholarly presentation of a critical conversation on the topic, and
a synthetic statement of the individual critical perspective on that topic you have developed in the course of your research and writing about it.
If done correctly, these two aims will not be composed in isolation (one at a time, as it were) but rather in tandem: your individual, critical perspective informing the arrangement and style of the presentation of the critical conversation and that conversation generating concepts and questions crucial for the articulation of your individual, critical perspective.
One way to ensure that you have worked through your topic and research on that topic to a sufficient extent is to develop (whether expressly articulated as such in the paper or not) a question that will orient your thoughts on your chosen topic throughout the research paper. This question should be prompted by the critical conversation on your topic (i.e., given what people are saying about the topic > your question) but also formulated in such a way that it implies an interrogative or argumentative point of view on that topic. Your question may be one that you never completely answer in the course of your research paper, but it should be one that the final stage of the paper, your conclusion, offers a perspective on that could not have been arrived at without previous developments of the paper. The transformative effect of your conclusion will be one of the criteria on which your final research paper will be evaluated and graded. A minimum of eight sources should be featured on your final Works Cited page and incorporated in a meaningful way in the body of the paper.
The main goal of your research paper should be to demonstrate your ability to combine all these modes of writing, discussed and practiced over the course of this semester, into a seamless and polished final composition:
Catchy and appropriate titles and subtitles
Opening “hook” to grab your reader’s interest
Thesis statement
Summarized and paraphrased historical (or other contextual) background on your topic
Ample contextual detail pertaining to your sources
Properly incorporated quotations from your sources
Transitions made in accordance with ideas about your topic
Varied emphasis, in accordance with the level of interest/importance of elements of the paper
Correctly formatted Works Cited page and corresponding parenthetical citations and/or notes
Proper grammar, orthography, syntax, and typographical execution
You may consider employing section breaks to separate different components of the presentation of the argument of the Research Paper as standalone arguments or demonstrations, and you are invited to consider using other forms of presenting evidence besides written paragraphs, such as data visualizations and/or images.
