This is a reflection paper about tobacco use and products. For the sake of this paper, I am considering all nicotine delivery devices, to include vapes and e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, etc., in addition to cigarettes.
First, select three (or more) sources (journal articles, studies, websites, podcasts, etc.); you can select sources from https://tobaccocontrol.bmj.com/content/tobaccocontrol/21/2/103.full.pdf or you can find your own, or a combination of both. Any articles you use need to be related to tobacco use and/or products. If you are unsure if they are appropriate, you can email your instructor to discuss. Also, at least one of the three sources you use for this paper needs to be from an academic journal.
Two tips: it helps to think of a theme or message or experience that you would like to discuss and select sources that relate to this
Your paper should consist of four parts:
Part 1: List five facts that you learned or that you found interesting from the source material that you read. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM YOUR SOURCE. Tell me in your own words.
Part 2: Write a reflection on the facts and what you learned in the material. Here are some examples of what this could look like:
You can relate this back to something in your life: a personal experience, your experience in another class or with something you have learned somewhere else. So this might be talking about a family member who smoked, or thinking about how smoking advertising relates to topics you have discussed in an advertising class.
You can relate this to something in the news or a cultural phenomenon. If you do this, it would be helpful for one of your articles to discuss this.
You can just dive deeper into explaining the concept and what you read, while discussing your reaction to it.
You can relate what you read to other learning material, explaining the studies, discussing any risk factors listed, etc.
Or, find another creative way to discuss what you read. These are just examples. The main thing I want to see is that you understand what you were reading and taking time to reflect on it.
Part 3: Assess the sources: write 2-4 sentences on each source explaining why (or why not) you would consider this source to be quality, reliable information. There are two resources from the class that you can use to evaluate your sources:
Part 4: A reference page. Please see information below on how to set this up.
Citation: Preferred citation style for public health is APA. You do NOT need to include a cover page, but you will need to include in-text citations and a reference list. Include your name, the class and quarter and the assignment title at the top of the paper. (If you prefer to use a style different to APA, you are welcome to do so. You would just need to note what style you are using in the comments on the D2L submission page. You will still need to cite all your references appropriately.)
