This is a 2 part essay. A PDF of the instructions and images is attached. Instructions also below:
Make sure to cite the page number when relying on or directly quoting the textbook (textbook google drive link at the bottom).
PART I
Three short-answer questions (350-500 words each) in which you compare two slides and respond to specific questions about that comparison. You will choose three out of five comparison questions to answer.
Your essays should provide complete identifications of each slide, including the information in the captions in the textbook (name, artist (if known), medium, location, date). Your answers should make use of appropriate art historical terminology and should respond directly to the questions. All information required for your essays is either in the textbook or in the resources provided in the weekly modules. No additional research is required or recommended. Answers will be graded based on how well you demonstrate a familiarity with the two images and their historical context, and how well you relate these images to the prompt.
Question #1
Identify these two slides (refer to pdf) and describe their similarities and differences, using appropriate architectural terminology. How do their layouts relate to the religious functions they served?
Question #2
Identify these two slides (refer to pdf) and describe their similarities and differences. How does each one relate to the natural landscape, the seasonal calendar, and a conception of the cosmos?
Question #3
Identify these two slides (refer to pdf) and describe the similarities and differences. What information and ideas about the gods they represent does each figure convey?
Question #4
Identify these two slides (refer to pdf) and describe their similarities and differences. How does each figure convey a sense of authority; how do the materials with which they were made relate to cultural and/or economic exchange?
Question #5
Identify these two slides (refer to pdf) and describe their similarities and differences. What is the significance of nature in each case and how would they be experienced by contemporary viewers?
Part II
Essay questions (800-1000 words). Please choose one of the three choices given below and write one essay of between 800 and 1000 words.
Your essay should include three examples from three different chapters of the textbook. These examples can be art, architecture, or a group of artworks. You may not reuse an artwork you discussed in the short answer questions. Your essay should also include an introduction, a conclusion, and respond directly to the question through as many body paragraphs as your responses dictate (you may want to have 3 body paragraphs, each focusing on one of your three chosen examples). Your answers should make use of appropriate art historical terminology and should respond directly to the questions. All information required for your essays is in the textbook. No additional research is required or recommended.
Question #1
Discuss how political power and religion are intertwined in the production of art and architecture.
Question #2
Discuss how the human body has been represented in art and what this tells us about the culture in which that art was made.
Question #3
Discuss the meaning and significance of ornament in art and architecture.
