This first assignment is a short position paper on China and the United States.

May 5, 2024

This first assignment is a short position paper on China and the United States. There are two objectives: A. To evaluate sources with events or topics of the modern world for this paper. B. To assess 21st Century world events and link them to the past – historically, culturally, economically and politically. There are two parts to the paper and the use of four sources (specified below) is required.
Part I: The first part of the paper should be 1 page in length and should answer the following question: How has the relationship changed over time between the United States and China? This part of the paper must show use of both of the attached articles:
“China Looks at the World, The World Looks at China” from by Lampton, 2010.
“China and America” by David Lampton, 2018.
Be sure that you cite the articles in the body, at the point of use, and that you distinguish between the two articles by adding the date, as in (Lampton, 2018) and (Lampton, 2010). Please note: you do not have to agree with the Lampton’s interpretation of events. You can argue against his views in the paper–just be sure to incorporate both of his articles in the body of the paper.
Part II: For the second half of your paper (also to be 1 page in length), take a stand/position on the following: Who emerges as the most powerful economically and militarily – China or the United States? Explain. This part of the paper must use:
Two (2) outside academic books or peer-reviewed academic journal articles that were not assigned for our course. Please note: Do not use any type of reference materials even if they are in books, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, or Credo Reference. Do not use any other type of article other than peer-reviewed academic journal articles. Do not use book reviews, magazines, or student work (which includes theses or dissertations). Be sure to show use of both of the outside sources, citing them at the point of use.
No sources should be used in the paper that do not conform to our Sources Requirements (in the Week 1 Content; a copy is attached). Use of any lower-tier sources will result in point deductions.
The structure of the paper should be as follows:
Include an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph (though these can be rather short).
Indent each paragraph.
Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced. This is required.
Use formal, correct English; no hyperbole, no slang; use only objective language. This is not a personal opinion exercise. Rather you should seek to convince the reader by the quality of your arguments, the data and reasoning you provide. To this end, keep it formal: use formal, correct English. Do not use the language of self such as “I think/believe/feel.” Do not make references to pop culture, or to personal experiences. Do not make references to the class or to the directions–in formal papers we pretend that we are writing for an interested reader, rather than our own class.
Include citation for each source in two places: both at the point of use (in the body of the paper) and in the list of references/bibliography/works cited at the end. Use CMS, APA, or MLA formatting for the citations and ref list.
