Instructions:
4 Page Literature Review (NOT including Title and Reference page)
Topic: The Cold War: A Clash of Ideologies and Power Struggle
Research
Question: What factors contributed to the prolonged ideological
and power struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union during the
Cold War, and how do the Liberal and Realist theories of International
Relations explain this sustained conflict?
*Please rework and revamp this Research Question* – It is vague.
1. Analyze the basic theories that explain the interactions among the major actors in the international system, and that form the basis for the discipline of international relations.
2. Critique major theories of international relations.
3. Synthesize literature regarding basic theories about the international system.
The literature review sets the context for the entire research project by explaining what others have found in researching the same or similar specific research questions. The literature review is written in a narrative format.
A literature review begins with an introductory paragraph in which the writer frames the research topic and its significance, and the puzzle that the researcher is addressing. To do that, the writer will summarize the major relevant arguments on the research subject, highlighting the main issues. If there are key terms to be defined, the writer should do that here. The body of the literature review tells readers what others have found in their studies about your specific research question (the extent of existing knowledge on your specific research question), critiques what is right or wrong with these other studies, and discusses how the work is distinguishable from the research study you are proposing. Your review should organize material by theme or method or what makes sense for the project.
This literature review should include a critical review of at least 10 appropriate articles, including scholarly, peer-reviewed articles, and material from government publications and website references. The conclusion should summarize the primary “sense of the literature”, and encapsulate to the reader where the existing literature ends, and your research will start as you seek to answer the question that remains and add to the body of knowledge.
“A literature review is a text written by someone to consider the critical points of current knowledge. A comprehensive survey of the works published in a particular field of study or line of research, usually over a specific period, in the form of an in-depth, critical bibliographic essay or annotated list in which attention is drawn to the most significant works.”
An annotated bibliography is “a brief explanatory or evaluative note is added to each reference or citation. An annotation can be helpful to the researcher in evaluating whether the source is relevant to a given topic or line of inquiry.”
While a literature review and annotated bibliography share some similarities, they serve different purposes. A literature review answers a particular question about a particular subject (primarily:  what does the existing scholarly research have to say about my topic?). An annotated bibliography, by contrast, is more focused on the content and contribution of each source (and showcases your understanding of each).
Do NOT use excessive direct quotes (No more than 10% of the text).
Do NOT provide an annotated bibliography.
