This assignment requires you to go out in the field and observe behavior. Go to a social setting of your choosing such as a park, mall, or library, and observe behavior for at least 45 minutes. Pick something interesting to observe.
You must take notes while you observe. This can include descriptions of conversations, behaviors, as well as other relevant information such as aspects of the environment that may be important. Type your notes (I do not expect you to write in full sentences or use proper grammar and punctuation during the observation. However, when you turn these notes into field notes, I expect it to be cleaned up. Consider typing them as bullet points). While observing, your notes must be hand written or typed (no video/audio recordings of those whom you are observing). After your field observation is complete, you will need to record your general reaction to your experiences as a field observer. Consider how this made you feel and if your reaction was what you had anticipated or if it was different and how so.
Other Notes: For this assignment you must be a complete observer, no “going native.” You should use wise judgement as to where you decide to do your observations, be safe, do not do anything illegal, and if you are not supposed to be observing an activity then do not. I am not responsible if you get intotrouble in anyway while doing this assignment.
You should be able to observe the same individual(s) for a decent amount of time during this assignment. For example, if you are near a jogging path and only see people for a minute before they are gone, you should choose a different social setting to conduct your observations.
Assignment Requirements:
• Field notes – include information about the location where you did your observations, the time of day, and the date the observation was conducted. In addition, these should be typed (bullet point format is fine). These should be at least a couple of pages long.
• One page where you provide a reflection of your experiences as a field observer.
Submission and Formatting Details:
• This assignment should be double-spaced, 12-point font(either Times New Roman or Calibri), and use the default margins.
