This assignment requires students to write a book review on one book of their choice on a topic related to criminal justice policies and the reviews will be shared by all the students in the class. As the literature in criminal justice and criminology is voluminous, it is impossible for any scholar to keep track of new ideas and read the scores of books annually published. However, they can get abridge versions in book reviews. In this class, each student will read a book and write a review which all other students will read. Due to this method, each student will benefit from reading six books besides his/her book. Students are asked to select a book on policies related to any criminal justice topic or issue and write a review. In the book review students should try to address the following aspects:
A summary of the materials covered in the book.
Identify the main points or themes discussed in the book.
What were the goals and objectives of the author(s)?
What method was followed by the author(s) in completing his/her research (book)?
Discuss the book’s data and data collection techniques.
Why does the writer divide the book into sections or chapters?
How are the chapter divisions related to the book’s goals and objectives?
Identify the book’s contribution to the main policy issue it has tried to address.
Examine all the above issues and at the end provide your opinion about the book and also say about future research that should be addressed in light of reading your review book.
