This assignment is to research a primary article. The main theme for the primary article is Westward Expansion of Industrialization of America, 1840-1860. The topics are open in the subjects of industries, inventions, transportation, immigration, social, religious, gender equality, political, ethnic native American or slavery issues pertaining to laws of that era.
Some suggestive areas are researching industries of manufacturing, investigate the operations of the Lowell Mills in New England states to the factories in New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
Another option is the inventions during this era of the steam powered shipping, railroads, or the telegraphs, cotton gin, lobster traps, sewing machines, grist mills, baseball, units of measure… there are a lot of inventions to research.
Social classes were a developing division of the merchant, middle class society, along with more educational opportunities from trade schools and universities and college establishments. Women were working and earning rights from education to seeking the right of equality. Increase of European and Asian immigrants for filling labor needs of mining, factories, and railroads. Religion had an impact from the Second Awaking of forming various united religious group, especially in the Midwest states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
Laws along with social norms were changing that directly affected the philosophies of the North and South difference. The position of having Free vs Slave states admitted to the Union, slavery and the Abolitionists movement, published literature from former slaves such as Frederick Douglas to the fictional novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe is another suggestion. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1852 was a law that changed freedoms for slaves and that of the Northern peoples. NAACP formed in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY.
A good selection is provided on your portal content, ‘Course Materials and Resources’. On the PPCC library website in the History section is another good research area for a primary article for this assignment. (See PPCC Library of Home on History, Web Resources on History, Resources for research and Writing on History.)
