This assignment is designed to help you analyze the concepts of perception and attention and apply it to real life (course learning goals #2 and #3). For success with this assignment, you should include what you learned through the week’s reading assignments and instructional video.
Please use the following vignette when writing your essay:
Imagine you are a manager at a local fast food restaurant. It is a busy place, full of hustle bustle, and so you have a co-manager. Together, the two of you oversee the employees and make sure the business runs smoothly. There is one employee at the restaurant who is consistently getting in trouble for various offenses such as arriving to work late, being disorganized, forgetting instructions, and getting distracted with his tasks. His food is consistently coming out of the kitchen slower than the other employees’, and customers are getting frustrated with the slow service. You and your co-manager are getting complaints, and your co-manager wants to just “fire him and be done with it.” You, however, have more of an understanding about perception and attention and suspect you might be able to retain this employee on staff if some changes are made.
Please write a 3-page essay discussing what you know about perception and attention. You are welcome to include more than the following questions, but be sure to at least address these questions in your essay:
1. How are sensation and perception necessary in everyday life? Please provide examples.
2. What are the three views of attention? Please provide examples.
3. How does attention affect our perception? Please provide examples.
4. How might the fast food employee in the vignette above be struggling with perception, attention, or both?
Your essay should be 3 to 4 pages of text, plus a title page and reference page. Your paper should be in proper APA Professional format (if you are unsure of APA Professional formatting, please reference the materials provided in the Week 0 learning activity). You are not required to provide an abstract. Your essay should include at least 3 peer-reviewed references, which should be cited throughout your essay (I recommend a minimun of nine citations). You are welcome to use the (McBride et al., 2023) text and any published journal articles. Websites are not considered valid references in academic work.
