This assignment is based on the content covered in chapter 1 – 11 of HMSC 312 Sports
Commercialization and Sports Law. The purpose of this assignment is to 1) provide you with
the opportunity to practically apply the content of this module and 2) to develop a
comprehensive plan for establishing a sports club. This assignment will enable you to
understand and apply various aspects including starting a sports club, defining club goals and
objectives, legal considerations, risk management, marketing strategies and processes, and
pricing structures involved in creating and managing a sports club. This is a group assignment,
4-6 members in a group.
Assignment Instructions:
Step 1: developing the club
• Find a group. Groups members of 4-6 members.
• Create / choose a name for your sports club. (Ensure it reflects the club’s identity and
resonates with the target audience).
• Create a Mission, vision and goals and Objectives for your sport club. Define the mission
statement and objectives of your sports club. What do you aim to achieve through the
establishment of this club?
• Club branding (create a logo) and explain what the elements stand for.
• Location: decide where this sports club will be and motivate why
• Target Audience: Identify the target demographic for your sports club. Consider factors
such as age, gender, skill level, and interests.
• Sports Offered: Determine which sports your club will focus on. Will it be a multi-sport club
or specialize in a particular sport?
• Club Structure: Outline the organizational structure of your sports club. This may include
positions such as president, vice president, treasurer, coaches, and other relevant roles.
Step 2: legal aspects
• Research and identify the laws and regulations relevant to establishing and operating a
sports club in SA.
• Summarize the key legal requirements that must be fulfilled for the establishment and
operation of the sports club.
• Discuss any specific laws or regulations that may impact your sports club (e.g., amateur
vs. professional, youth-oriented, working with minors etc.).
Step 3: Club contracts:
• Draft a sample club contract outlining the terms and conditions for club membership
include:
o clauses related to membership fees, code of conduct, liability waivers, breach of
contract, termination of contract and any other relevant aspects.
o Ensure that the club contract complies with the legal requirements identified.
Step 4: Risk management
• Identify potential risks associated with operating a sports club (Risk for the club & risk for
the members). And discuss how these risks can be mitigated.
Step 5: Marketing of the club
• Imagine your club is hosting an event (any event such as a swimming gala, a colour
run, golf day etc.) Only 1 event.
• Create a poster to advertise / market the event that your club will be hosting.
