This assignment is all about integrating Ch 15 with the police organizational changes, or lack thereof, post George Floyd. Here we’re not looking at police reform policy, such as new laws or oversight committees, but rather how police departments changed since 2020.
There are several resources to start with in the module intro page but you will probably have to do some research on your own to answer these questions. Develop a response to each and cite the sources you used to do so. Un-cited work will not earn credit.
1) Explain 3 major factors that are forcing change to occur in US police departments. You CAN NOT include BLM or George Floyd’s death as a factor.
2) The text suggests 5 situations when change should not be initiated. Which of these seem to be inhibiting police org. change or retarding changes promised post Floyds death?
3) Identify and explain a scenario where the police rank and file promoted change and made it happen, and one scenario where they successfully blocked any meaningful change.
4) Considering the learning and research you’ve done, what seems to be the biggest hurdle to police organizational change, in your opinion? Explain your selection.
5) Respond to the following statement: “Technology and AI will create the police organizational changes that citizens demanded during the Floyd protests that Chiefs couldn’t or wouldn’t do.” (no cite needed here, this is your educated and factually supported response)
