Nursing theories shape how nurses understand, approach, and deliver patient care. Nursing knowledge includes the scientific principles, evidence, and best practices that guide nursing care. Nursing theories help provide a professional identity by providing the framework for understanding the role of the nurse within the healthcare system. They define the core concepts, principles, and values that shape nursing practice. Lastly, nursing knowledge and theories equip nurses with the critical thinking skills necessary to practice safely.
Applying nursing theory benefits me personally by enhancing my clinical practice, critical thinking skills, and professional development. Moreover, it empowers and advances the nursing profession by promoting autonomy, advocating for patients, fostering a culture of lifelong learning, and driving research initiatives to improve patient care. By understanding the underlying theories behind patient care, I can plan interventions to meet the unique needs of each patient, leading to better health outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.
Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory has had a significant impact on my nursing practice. Orem’s theory provides a framework for developing individualized care plans based on patient’s unique self-care deficits (Yip, 2021). I assess patients’ self-care abilities and identify areas where they require assistance or support. This individualized approach ensures that my nursing interventions are tailored to each patient’s specific needs, enhancing the effectiveness and relevance of their care. Orem’s theory takes a holistic view of the individual, considering their physical, psychological, social, and developmental needs (Zhang & Pan, 2021). I using this theory assess not only patients’ physical symptoms but also their abilities to perform activities of daily living, manage their emotions, and interact with their environment. As I continue my education and career, I can still apply the SCDNT to my practice as a FNP. Yip (2021) states that the SCDNT can serve as an effective theoretical framework for advanced practice nurses in the primary care setting.
