Articles:
National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy
In this addition to the quarterly publication of the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy, there are many good articles that offer concrete ways to connect research and practice. The one specifically assigned reading is Differentiated Instruction by Mary Ann Corley, on pgs. 13–16. Read the article to note the application of Tomlinson’s principles that you’ve been reading in our text to adult education. Be sure to read and pay particular attention to “The Theory” in the blue box at the end of the article on pg. 15. This connects the practice of differentiation to the educational theories behind the practice. By the end of the reading, you should be reassured that what you have been learning in this course applies to all learners, regardless of age or educational context.
Handouts:
Multiple Intelligences Product Grid: Dr. T. Roger Taylor has developed a Product Grid aligned to the eight Multiple Intelligences identified by Howard Gardner. Analyze the product list and Product Grid (to identify how these varied products might meet the needs of different learners). Which products are better for struggling learners? Why? Which are better for advanced learners? Why? Are there overlaps of Taylor’s lists with Tomlinson’s Figure 13.2 on pg. 89 of our text? Can you add ideas to this list?
Three Stages of Learning Handout : This handout should help you organize your final project for this course. I would suggest that you print it out.
