April 30, 2024

This assignment asks you to apply concepts from chapter 3.
Complete and upload the assignment in word processing document (e.g. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc) to Canvas by the deadline.
Criteria for success: see the assignment description below and the canvas grading rubric.
Take one of the Harvard perception tests that are designed to reveal implicit bias in how we perceive people based on cultural affiliations.
You may take any of the tests linked above.
The test you take may not accurately reflect your perceptions of yourself but is a tool designed to make you think about your perceptions.
Please write a paragraph consisting of 8 to 10 thoughtful, complex sentences on your experience with taking one of the tests. (By “complex” I simply mean that if you are writing the minimum of 8 sentences, none your sentences should be, for example, 5-word sentences. Make them thoughtful). You do not have to share exactly what your results were if you don’t want to, but you do need to explain what you thought about the test and your results as it relates to chapter 3 of the textbook and the chapter 3 online materials. .
However, you must address at least three of the following questions:
How accurate was it for you? Explain your answer.
Were you skeptical of the results? Explain your answer.
How has it made you think differently about perceptions, biases and how they are impacted by cultural identities?
Since everyone has perception-based biases, where do we learn these?
How do you think can we overcome our perception biases?
Use at least one direct quotation from chapter 3 to support your ideas. Your quotation should be a substantive, fundamental part of your post, and you should explain how the quotation supports your ideas. A direct quotation must have quotation marks around the words that were written by the textbook authors (that is true is all classes and in all writing, everywhere, anytime you are using words that are not your own). When you quote the textbook, you do not need a full citation at the end of your post because we are all drawing from a common text, but you must include the textbook page number in parentheses. For example, you might write: McCornack and Morrison tell us that “it is your public self that your friends, family members, and romantic partners hold dear” (42). I do know that one of the e-publishers has a different page numbering system. That’s fine, I can generally recognize both page numbering systems.
