Jazmine Trivval is a 20-year-old female. Jazmine presents to hospital feeling unwell. She states that she has been taking paracetamol for fevers for the last 24hrs, that she feels lethargic, and that she has pain in her groin region.
On examination, Jazmine looks tired with sunken eyes, she is warm to touch and there is a swollen area in her left groin that is very warm to touch, painful and red. The area measures 7cm in diameter, and the redness is tracking down her leg another 5cm. Near the centre is a smaller dark red area with 3 pustules. Jazmine tells you that she had an ingrown hair that she squeezed a few days ago. Her vital signs on admission are: RR 18bpm, SpO2 97%, HR 128bpm, BP 80/50mmHg, temp 38.4°C.
Jazmine states that she has ‘never been sick in her life’, and that she has only ever taken the occasional paracetamol for pain. She states that she has never taken any other type of medication.
The medical team find that the infected hair follicle has been colonised by staphylococcus bacteria. She is diagnosed with Folliculitis, with a resulting cellulitis and sepsis.
Jazmine is ordered: Flucloxacillin 2g IV 6th hourly, and 1L Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride) over 4hours.
Jazmine responds well to treatment. Her vital signs normalise, and the infection slowly resolves.
Jazmine stays in hospital for 3 days, then, when she is feeling better, she is discharged home with a further 7-day course of Flucloxacillin- 500mg PO 6th hourly.
Use this information to complete Assessment 1- Written Case Study.
Please note:
Part 1 (pathophysiology) is to be based on Jazmine’s infection.
Parts 2-4 (pharmacology + nursing interventions) is to be based on Jazmine while she is in hospital receiving IV Flucloxacillin 2g IV 6th hourly.
