Overview
The
primary outcome of a PhD degree is the production of an original work of
research of dissertation length. In the coursework leading up to that capstone
project, students are given opportunities to build the skills necessary for a
good dissertation. This
assignment, the research paper assignment, is a helpful tool in several ways.
First, it allows students to build research and writing skills. Second, it can
be used as a contribution to the dissertation to follow. Third, it allows the
student to take a deep dive into a narrow field of inquiry. Each of these helps
to guide the student along the path toward his or her own publication later. In
the first phase of the program, these skills are still in the process of being
developed. This assignment serves as a good “trial run” of what will come later
as the student advances further.

You will
need a minimum of 15 scholarly sources that includes monographs, scholarly
journal articles, chapters in scholarly edited works, or original source
material from historical figures. 15 is the minimum. You should use as many
sources as you need to make your point clearly and concisely. A good rule of
thumb is one source per page for thorough research.
Be sure
to make full use of the LU Library, including ATLA and the collection of e-books
available to everyone. Print books can also be checked out by contacting the
library. If you plan on using printed materials, please get them early! The
class is only eight modules long. Make sure to use your time wisely.
Your

research, clarity, and style.
