Having a well-conceptualized theoretical orientation is essential for becoming a competent group counselor Given your stage of professional development, it is not expected that you have committed to any specific theoretical orientation.
However, it is necessary that you begin to explore and test out various theoretical orientations in your practical experiences. In this essay, you are to describe and discuss your theoretical orientation for group counseling work. As you describe and discuss your theoretical orientation, please make sure to thoroughly cover the following areas in the order listed (5 full pages minimum):
a) Discuss and define the theory or theories that you are most influenced by in terms of your role as a group counselor. Include how your group theoretical orientation is developing, and how key influential experiences and your personal characteristics/counseling style affected the development of your group theoretical orientation.
b) Discuss how your group theoretical orientation will inform your role as a group counselor.
c) Discuss how your group theoretical orientation will inform the types of techniques you plan or do use in group practice.
You should include skills that we have learned over the course of this semester from the Micro skills book, but you are also allowed and encouraged to include other skills.
