The Writing Assignment in Module 4 is in 2 parts:
Part 1 (here) is for your review of 3 or more articles in the Book,
HUMAN RIGHTS & MEDIA (ed Papademas), available links are in the Module
description.
Summarize the portrayals, images, representations from at least three
of the articles in the Book. Various themes are presented: War,
Disability, LGBQT……
You may critique whether or not the author presented the perspectives
well or whether or not you would have added another perspective.
In describing the “images” and “representations”, remember that images
are not only the “pictorial”, but are forms of representation that may
be found in the authors/ text.
FORMAT:
MINIMUM OF 250 WORDS PER ARTICLE: 750 WORDS – 1000. YOU MAY SEQUENCE
3 ARTICLE SUMMARIES, POSSIBLY PROVIDE POINTS OF COMARISON.
MODULE 4 ESSAY (Part 2 of writing assignment):
Choose a Theme:
Gender
Race/Ethnicity
Disability
Age
Social Issue (like War, Poverty, Child Labor)
Provide a list of MEDIA Stereotypes associated with your theme (it’s
best to focus on one theme). Minimum of 10-15. This list should be
drawn from your course readings, documentary materials streamed….
Provide a list of MEDIA Alternatives. This list should match your
stereotypes by providing a media alternative tio the steroetype.
Youmay create an “alternatives” list to add to those you may locate
actual in the course materials.
In paragraphs (up to 1500 words), describe the theme, stereotypes,
media “locations”, and your alternatives to the stereotypes, including
forms of media that would place the stereotype to have some
challenging effects.
Be sure to keep focussed on the CONTENT. Do not develop another
“effects/impact” or media system context essay. The two are
connected, and it us beneficial to be able to discern the CONTENT (and
its interpretive meanings to different people), from the CONTEXT that
shapes the content.
