The this and reply to it
I reside in the state of Arizona and have an interest in the future of becoming a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or owning homes for children with mental health illnesses. Bill HB2098 is a law that allows PMHNPs to perform a psychiatric assessment on minors, expanding the list of professionals permitted (Track Bill, 2022). So, this would enable me, after becoming a certified PMHNP in the state of Arizona, to do inpatient and outpatient assessments of minors and allow me to make recommendations for mental health services. This bill was recently passed in April of this year and signed by the governor of Arizona (Track Bill, 2022).
Nurses can influence policy and politics worldwide (Welliver, n.d.). Nurses have a moral and professional duty to participate in legislation that impacts the profession and their patients (Welliver, n.d.). Nurses impact politics that enhance the approach to healthcare. Ultimately, they advocate for patients and their profession (Welliver, n.d.). Sadly, nurses have not had enough participation in policy and legislation that affects the delivery of healthcare (Welliver, n.d.).
As nurses progress in their professional proficiency, involvement in the profession becomes more convincing and appealing (Weberg et al., 2019). All nurses should support the following interest me included:
1. Become knowledgeable in procedures of policy changes and the different methods that are efficient at local, state, and national levels (Weberg et al., 2019).
2. Build alliances with knowledgeable stakeholders with evidentiary assistance for policymaking or revision (Weberg et al., 2019).
3. Propose a new policy of great importance to you, such as telehealth, patient safety, and medication errors. Start at the local level and then move to the state level, such as the BON or DHS (Weberg et al., 2019).
4. Examine current policies and find the policy’s effectiveness (Weberg et al., 2019).
5. Integrate evidence into the policy processes when feasible (Weberg et al., 2019).
6. Proposals of ideas for expanding nursing attendance in healthcare policy debates (Weberg et al., 2019).
Additionally, to understand the source, subject, and effects of healthcare policies, it is vital to realize the nursing profession’s role in giving policymakers feedback when policies are ineffective or do not reach the desired outcomes (Weberg et al., 2019). Speaking up and offering feedback is coherent with moral and skilled methods (Weberg et al., 2019).
