The thesis is a 12k word literature review in the field of clinical psychology. A table of contents is required, an abstract, a methodology section, results and discussion section. The writer is required to understand how to read, analyze, synthesize and report and significant/relevant data from a number (approx 20) studies that have conducted empirical research on the thesis topic. Full text English peer reviewed journal articles that included methodology section was included. there were 8 articles that studied therapist responses, countertransference and patients with borderline personality disorder. 6 studies examined countertransference in personality disorders. And 5 studies look at how severity of personality organization impacted countertransference. The data from these articles were obtained using a variety of research methodologies, which need to be understood by the writer, summarizing and noting key data relevant to the topic and research question, and if relevant, presented in tables for ease of reading.
Crucially, when synthesizing and reporting on the data of these papers – the studies done on personality disorders and severity of personality organization will include other personality disorders (eg. narcicissm). When reporting the data of these articles that focus on various types of personality disorders, the writer must make sure to emphasize the data that pertains to borderline personality disorder specifically and not branch out into the other disorders. A prevalent issue on this topic is that clients with personality disorders are difficult to treat. Therapists often have feelings of frustration towards these clients. When therapists are not aware of countertransference processes, this may be detrimental to the therapeutic process. The paper should examine the data on therapist responses to these types of clients and the impact and implications of it.
