This is the direction of my change project… The assignment directions and rubric are attached along with an exemplar (that was “not good”
Hi Dyamond,
Thanks for a great convo. You are in such an interesting setting for this project & I like your ideas to address the deficits in the resources and curricular needs that are creating inequitable outcomes.
As we discussed – that background info from your new principal on what the current priorities look like and where the academics fits is a good place to begin> Then, moving to a needs assessment for the faculty. Finally – creating a multi-pronged plan that addressed those needs. We discussed: grant options to purchase current textbooks, and professional learning for faculty on essential elements of instruction – perhaps universal design for learning (https://udlguidelines.cast.org/) would be a really good start. The UDL model is particularly effective for students with disabilities. Training your faculty to plan and deliver instruction using this model would be an excellent way to build teacher efficacy and effectiveness. We also discussed an online model for learning for students are out of school. This online piece might include: procuring laptops & WiFI for families without access, a reserach-based online learning program, and faculty trained specifically in the delivery of online instruction.
Feedback from my professor after I submitted parts 1 and 2 out of 6……
To start, provide 1-2 sentences of introduction that provide some context for where this change plan is taking place (district, school, grade level) – not a 3 para intro before you get into Part 1; simply some context for grounding the project.
In Part 1, please include (in this order):
the district’s vision and/or mission & an explanation of the disparity/inequity that is at odds with the statement(s)
Reflection on changes to school operations and procedures (culture, climate, procedures, etc.) that would improve the disparity and result in more equitable access, outcomes, and overall well-being for students.
At the end of part 1, include one clear and concise statement that encapsulates your change idea and the student outcome you hope to achieve (think Theory of Action/logic model/if…then statement – see below for an example).
Note: several folks identified a disparity but did not clearly indicate what your ONE change idea to ameliorate the problem is going to be; so make sure you can do this in a clear and concise statment.
In Part 2 you identify & describe your change idea in detail.
Provide your rationale – this is supported with DATA (EdSight, building data, anecdotal, survey data, etc); Present data claerly – a table is best when you are showing multiple numbers. Ideally, you want 3 years of data so that you can point to a trend as opposed to a one-off. USE APA &th edition: see PurdueOWL website for models
Support your need for the change by citing at least three (3) professional resources such as journals, books, or other published material on the topic
Finish with the one(1) NELP standard that is most closely related to your change idea and explain why it fits
One final note: acronyms are everywhere in education. When you use them, you must first write out the whole word and put the acronym in parentheses afterwards (i.e. the National Education Association (NEA)
An example of a theory of action from Massachusetts is:
If we engage in continuous improvement (set high standards, evaluate based on those standards, collect evaluation information, and provide support based on that data) THEN all educators will become more effective, all students will have more equitable access to great educators, AND student outcomes will improve
