The second part of this unit is the actual essay on the topic you chose for your presentation. At this point, you are going to focus on making your specific claim/argument. Your essay should utilize some of the background/context that you established in your slides but mainly focus on making your claim/arguments.
The goal is simple: 1) Make a claim. 2) Support your claim. You should use your intro paragraph to provide some brief context so that you can make a concrete claim in your thesis. There should be no ambiguity in the side you are taking.
Keep in mind that acknowledgment of the other side can be a very useful tool in establishing authority and confidence in your voice as a writer. If you are going to make reference to counterarguments, I recommend taking on the format of mentioning the counter first and ending on your (correct) argument. It should take on a voice of something like “Some people think X, but the truth is Y.” (They say/I say.) End on the “correct” opinion to cement the idea that you have examined and analyzed an issue and came to an effective conclusion then support that idea with evidence.
Argumentative essays live and die by the effectiveness of body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should build on your argument and move your claims forward. They should include evidence and effectively support your thesis.
You have the ability to choose your own prompt and topic on this assignment. Your assignment is to make a claim, assert that claim, and try your best to provide the necessary context. In class we have discussed the importance of establishing our voice as a writer as a voice of confidence and authority. Remember to utilize the techniques we have discussed in class. As a reminder, it is very important that in most common topics there are at least two sides. It benefits you as a writer to acknowledge that as you assert your claim.
Your essay should be the following:
An argumentative essay based on the previously chosen topic of your choice. (Arguments have multiple sides. It will be to your benefit to acknowledge and explore that.)
An exhibition of critical thinking on your chosen topic. (Explore your ideas to their logical conclusions. Tell me what the implications are, and what they might implicate.)
An opportunity for students to argue something that holds significance to them. (The weirder/more specific, the better.)
An exhibition in the critical analysis of a topic and elements of argumentation. (Organize your argument/essay)
