April 20, 2024

The purpose of this assignment is to create a mitigation plan that addresses potential vulnerabilities of your community.
Now that you have practiced risk and vulnerability assessment, you will begin developing a mitigation plan for specific threats based on the vulnerabilities, threats, and hazards within your own community. If you find it difficult to locate information about your community, select a larger community near you. Research information on your community’s demographics, historical disaster threats, physical and social vulnerabilities, impacts to health and medical services, and additional information that will help you develop a mitigation plan for the community.
Use the “Critical Infrastructure Matrix” to organize the information you collected in your research. This matrix will help you examine five or six hazards that currently threaten your community. While it can be easy to identify obvious hazards, try to think about some of the less obvious ones that could potentially pose great risks to the community, yet are probably not receiving as much attention as they should in your community’s mitigation plans. Examine the physical and social vulnerabilities associated with each hazard, the government or public organizations responsible for dealing with those hazards, and a mitigation strategy to deal with each hazard.
After conducting your research and completing your matrix, develop the first part of your mitigation plan (750-1,000 words):
Include a profile of your community that provides a brief overview of the demographics, significant natural and manmade hazards, and the stakeholders who should be involved in mitigation planning.
Include the scope of the planning process. This would include the jurisdictions covered in the plan, stakeholders participating in the plan, and the resources required to support the planning process. The planning process should include examining the previous mitigation plan, if applicable, to determine areas of strength or weakness in the existing plan.
Submit the completed “Critical Infrastructure Matrix” and the initial mitigation plan to your instructor for feedback before continuing to complete the plan in later assignments.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
