The purpose of the literature review is characterized as the foundation for any research conducted. It is a synthesis of past studies on a topic that summarizes previous research, the importance of said research, and details gaps found in the research topic. Upon reading the literature review, academic audiences and others will understand the topic’s background and what the researcher(s) set out to assess through the study.
Each section of a research article is necessary to understanding the study conducted. The literature review is also vital because it establishes the research’s relevancy to academia based on potent information utilizing seminal works. According to Isaac-Smith and Greenberger (2020), the literature review creates a valuable and convincing rationale for the research which is to contain the following elements: unbiased, synthesized, critically analyzed, exhaustive, relevant, classified, connected, summarized, and referenced. If the literature review does not provide these elements, the study will be poor and affects the entire value of the research article. The decisions made of the study’s methodology will be compromised, and problems may occur due to a lack of understanding of past issues from previous studies and ways to avoid them. It affects data collected and reported, and the interpretation of the results may be misleading. It behooves the doctoral learner to do earnest work to ensure that the quality of work conducted meets or exceeds Grand Canyon University’s standards and leads to impactful changes in the area that the research is setting out to study.
