Imagine that a student enrolled in 120A was studying for the midterm and found that they had “forgotten” material that was covered during Week 2. The student hypothesizes that they may have forgotten the material because it had been a while since they last reviewed it. They also suspect that all the new information they have learned since Week 2 may have interfered with their memory of the older information. They are not sure if they have even completely forgotten the material and consider that maybe they are simply having trouble recalling it.
The three theories of forgetting discussed in Chapter 8 of the textbook are decay, interference, and retrieval failure. Design a memory experiment to explore the question of why a student may “forget” material they had previously learned. Choose two of the three theories of forgetting bolded above and set your experiment up in such a way that each theory would make a different prediction. Be sure to include what theories you chose, what your hypothesis is, and how you will experimentally test your hypothesis. Then indicate the independent variable(s) and dependent variable in your experiment. Please indicate any potential limitations or confounds your experiment may have.
