THE FINAL EXAM NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED DUE TO FINAL GRADE SUBMISSION D

April 2, 2024

THE FINAL EXAM
NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED DUE TO FINAL GRADE SUBMISSION DEADLINE.
The media of this project can be something that you make in the physical world (like a book or a text document with pictures) and submit virtually, or it can be a completely virtual project (created in Tumblr https://www.tumblr.com/Links to an external site., Prezi https://prezi.com/Links to an external site. , Canva https://www.canva.com/Links to an external site. or Powerpoint) and submitted electronically. You can pick from one of my themes below, or invent your own.
The central idea, no mater how or with what you make the project is that you are creating a relic (not unlike a medieval manuscript) that will transport the viewer and reader directly into the knowledge YOU have gained over the last 16 weeks.
SAMPLE TOPICS:
“A Great Timeline” – Take the reader on a tour from cave painting to the Italian pre-Renaissance (the time period covered in our textbook). You will need examples of ten art works to make your timeline complete. Each art work must be clearly explained as to where/what culture it comes from, what its primary use is, and should be stylistically and visually analyzed. Why is it important? As you move rapidly through history, your book should also explain the transitions between art works. (In other words, what is going on historically that clearly is revealing itself in the art?)
“Christianity in Art” – This book will explore the impact of the Christian religion on art making. The introduction should give examples of pagan art and the body of the text should lead through early Christian techniques, clearly define the impact of the Byzantine Iconoclasm and end with a conclusion in Gothic structures and later triumphs in Italian painting. This delightful manuscript should also have ten examples of art work to delight the reader.
“Geography is Destiny” – This tome will compare three diverse geographic regions. The three regions can be from any time period covered by the textbook (ex: Ancient Egypt/Mesopotamia/pre-Renaissance Italy or Ancient Rome/Romanesque/Gothic in France). You will need to isolate your three specific locations and stylistic movements in art (as I have done in the examples) and compare and contrast them. This text will be sure to include maps that clearly indicate the geography of your chosen cultures. How are the areas you are comparing similar or different? You will also need to include three examples of art work for each period and place that define its artistic expressions. How does where people are in the world (and in time) influence the art they make?
The goal: I am looking for critical thinking that shows me that you have engaged with the material and have made meaningful connections between objects, religion, history and humanity. A lofty goal, indeed! A simple regurgitation of stuff from the textbook will be easily identifiable as such. In other words, don’t do it
The “book” should be titled (with a clear indication to which theme you are choosing) and should reflect your individualism and creativity, much the same way that illuminated manuscripts reflected the personalities of their makers in tandem with the task they were asked to perform in making them.
USE YOUR IMAGINATION. The project should be titled (with a clear indication to which theme you are choosing) and should reflect your individualism and creativity, much the same way that art objects, real and virtual, reflect the personalities of their makers in tandem with the task they were asked to perform in making them.
The length of your project? Any chosen theme should be addressed in no less than 15-20 paragraphs total. Consider this when thinking about and preparing your outline. You should have a clear device to move the reader/viewer through an elegant introduction and thesis, an identified path through the work of your argument/ examples and a conclusion that ties together all the learning of this semester.
MAKE SURE TO USE THE RUBRIC AS A CHECKLIST TO ENSURE YOU INCLUDE ALL THE GRADED COMPONENTS. FOR EXAMPLE: IF YOU SUBMIT A PROJECT WITH NO INTRODUCTION AND NO CONCLUSION, THE HIGHEST GRADE YOU COULD EARN IS A 60. (Sorry to yell, but you DO NOT want a 60 on your Final.)
Some words of wisdom about the final:
(at this point this is just me repeating myself, but I want to be especially clear)
I expect original thinking.
Copy NOTHING directly from your text (any text) or internet sources.
NO AI NO AI NO AI – Machines cannot process the kind of thinking that you have accomplished on our journey together. Don’t try and make the robot do it.
If I see two or more words strung together that come from another author writing ANYWHERE about your topic/artist I will zero your assignment without question.
If you find the words of another and you MUST use them in your project, make sure to explicitly credit the original writer/ creator. This should equal no more than 2-3 sentences total of your project and do not count as content, per se.
This is your chance to be as creative as your desire. But in the end, this is a writing course, so it is the quality of the content in your verbal expressions that counts in the end. This is the place where all the work of the semester will be apparent and evident to me (and to you).
There are some samples of Final Projects for you to review in this Module.
My Very Best,
Katherine Bzura
