Instructions
Please incorporate the following elements in your Survey
Project: Part 2 – Draft Survey and List of References Assignment:
1. Title Page
2. Brief (no more than one page) writeup
describing the process you used to create your survey items. Questions to
answer in this writeup include (but are not limited to):
a.
Which
strategy (Theoretical or Logical-Content, described in the Overview) did you
employ, and how did you apply that strategy to write your items?
b.
How
did your references inform your survey items? Include citations!
3. Draft Survey
a.
Use
either the Theoretical Strategy or the Logical-Content Strategy (described in
the Overview) to formulate your test items. IMPORTANT: do not adapt
items from an existing survey. The items on your survey must be completely
original and written by you “from scratch”!
b.
When
creating your survey items, you will need to read and reference a minimum of
5–8 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. These sources must be directly related to
the hypothetical construct/variable that you intend to measure with your
survey. Use these scholarly sources to create survey questions that have both
face and content validity.
c.
Your
draft survey should include 15–20 items/questions that directly address the
variable that you intend to measure. When constructing items for your draft
survey, please keep in mind the following standard practices:
i.
Clearly
define your objectives for giving the test.
ii.
Identify
exactly what you want to measure.
iii. Choose your item format carefully.
The types of responses your items elicit will affect your data coding/analyses
and conclusions as well as the applications of your data, so be thoughtful when
choosing question type.
iv. Be concise but specific: make sure
your respondents will understand what you’re asking with each item
v.
Avoid
long items: they can be confusing to people responding to survey.
vi.
Keep
the reading level appropriate for your target group; avoid jargon and technical
terms.
vii.
Avoid
“Double-Barreled” items that ask people to respond to two issues at the same
time.
viii.
Avoid
“Loaded” questions that lead people to respond in a particular way.
ix.
Create
questions to minimize response set (i.e., tendency to agree or disagree with
all items).
x.
Be
sensitive to ethnic, cultural, and historical differences.
d.
Your
survey format should be inviting and pleasing to the eye, to encourage the best
possible response.
i.
The
font and font size should be suited to the target audience.
ii.
The
question numbering and organization should be clear.
iii.
The
headings, subheading and directions/explanations should be clear and should
effectively guide respondents through the survey.
4. Provide a references page for the
5–8 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources that you used to create your survey items.
The title
page, draft section, and reference page of the Survey Project: Part 2 –
Draft Survey and List of References Assignment must all be in current APA
format.
