The Diversity Experience Assignment has multiple parts that include
Cultural Informant,
Food, and
Minority Experience.
In writing the paper, you need to cite at least 3 scholarly sources, as well as course material. This paper should be 6-8 pages. Use the following outlines for each area:
CULTURAL INFORMANT (30 POINTS): arrange an in-person conversation with somebody from a different culture (different from you). Find out:
Where they are from and have them show you on a map.
Discuss access and barriers in their professional/vocational, social, academic, career, and /or personal/social development.
If they discuss oppression they’ve experienced, in your paper discuss possible solutions to such oppression should be included, both from the perspective of the interviewee and the student.
FOOD (30 POINTS): Go eat! Find a restaurant that serves authentic food from a culture other than your own. While at the restaurant ask for somebody to discuss:
The culture from which the food came;
Ex, you could ask: Where did this type of food come from? Was there a time or purpose behind how this food is prepared?
The history/tradition behind preparation of this food.
Example, Who taught you about this type of food, cooking?
Anything else important or special about the food and how it is connected to the culture.
MINORITY EXPERIENCE (30 POINTS): The student will attend an event associated with a culture that is different from his/her own culture, which he/she has not attended before and where he/she is noticeably a minority. Address the following areas in the paper:
Anticipation: This section should be completed before the event and should describe the anticipated event and feelings surrounding it.
Observations: This section should describe the student’s observations and immediate reactions (internal and external) to the experience.
A description of how the student engaged with a cultural informant in order to help him/her to understand the event
Reflection: This section should be based on the student’s experiences at the event and the student’s discussions with the cultural informant and should discuss the following:
The student’s analysis of the extent to which the dominant culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power, as related to the event he/she attended
Any new self-awareness the student experienced and the degree to which this self-awareness may assist the student to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups
The ways that difference shapes life experiences (as related to the event that was attended during the completion of the assignment)
What the student learned about the culture of the group represented at the activity he/she attended
