The Critical Review Outline:
Your paper MUST have the following—
Introduction w/ Thesis Statement (1 FULL Paragraph, at least 8-12 lines)
This part of the paper explores why you selected this author above all others, and it outlines, clearly, what you hope to explore/uncover about the author/scholar/creative and their work, as supported by your research.
Section I. ( at least 1 FULL page of writing)—
This part of the paper provides biographical information on your selected author/scholar/creative: where they were born; their family and upbringing; perhaps, where they went to school; important events that happened during their childhood and youth, and the impact all of this had in shaping their body of work and the themes their work focuses on. You MUST quote from your chosen source in this section.
Section II. (at least 1 ½ -2 FULL pages of writing)—
This part of the paper must explore the author’s/creative’s/scholar’s body of work: what they have worked on; what they hope to work on in the future; the types of themes their work(s) addresses and why. This section may also address how critics/reviewers/audiences have responded to your selected author’s/creative’s/scholar’s work; you should also address their success and failures (if any). You MUST quote from THIS SOURCE.
Section III. (at least 2-3 FULL pages)
In this section, you are required to write about your selected text (the one we studied in class) and why it’s meaningful to you. Here, you must address the text, plot, characters, themes, ideas, constructs (within the text)—exploring how they make your selected text unique and important (as you see it). You MUST quote from THE PRIMARY text (WE COVERED IN CLASS) in this section of the paper.
Section IV. (1 page)
The Works Cited page—MLA Style
The Works Cited MUST follow MLA guidelines; and must have at least THREE sources:
one that provides biographical information on the author/creative/scholar
one that discusses the author’s/creative’s/scholar’s body of work and/or responses to/reviews about their work
the selected text we studied in class
Helpful Hints:
When choosing sources, make sure that they are:
Relevant—Your source material should be specific to your research agenda and focused on your selected author/creative/scholar.
Current—While it’s possible to gain important information from a source that was written a long time ago, it is VERY important that the majority of your source material is current. Said differently, it must be penned by someone with a modern-day/contemporary understanding that supports your research agenda in a meaningful way.
Your source should be written by an expert—someone affiliated with the genre your selected author/creative/scholar works within; someone with a solid and respected reputation as a writer/scholar/creative; or someone who has explored the work of your selected author/creative/scholar before.
Avoid bias or sources that misrepresent themselves as fact-based.
Wikipedia is NOT a valid source. However, if you scroll down to the “References Used” section, there is usually a listing of source material there that may help you in your search for valid sources.
