The Community Engagement Project for LDR 525 is a culmination of the content knowledge gained as a result of the candidate’s participation in this course. It demonstrates the candidate’s ability to collect, synthesize and apply knowledge about the school, the district, and the community demographics and to present the data in such a way that it can be incorporated as part of the school and/or district improvement planning process.
The candidate completes a two part assignment that will 1) describe the school’s community and how it relates to the district community; 2) analyze the data collected in the description; 3) provide needs analysis for the school and community that can be applied to a school improvement action to better meet the needs of each student including EL’s, at risk early childhood students, and students with disabilities; 4) consider what district resources and supports might be used to meets the needs identified in the analysis 5) establish a community engagement project including a process that describes how you would establish, implement, sustain and evaluate the project.
Preparing For Project (Module 1)
Part I: COLLECT AND DESCRIBE (Due in Module 4)
Collect and present demographic information and observations about your school, your district and the community in order to demonstrate a strong understanding of the context of your school’s community. This thick description of your community should include both quantitative and qualitative data and should expand the descriptions beyond the school.
Explore the demographics of your school or district from a quantitative approach and from a qualitative approach. How does the data from your school compare to the district data?
Consider what parents want to know about a district if they are considering moving there. Also, here are some other items that you might wish to include: (Where able, use three years of data.) Do not include all of the following item, just the ones that you feel are most important in helping someone understand your school demographics.

Provide additional insights about the demographics of the school/district and community information that have been obtained from a variety of qualitative sources such as interviews, newspaper articles, photographs, personal observations, notes from a drive or walk through of the neighborhood(s). Include a significant explanation of the current community partnerships in your school. You may even consider sharing the map you created in module two.

Using your choice of application (Word document, PowerPoint or other program), create the following two components:
A data “booklet” that displays and presents the quantitative demographic data you researched using charts and graphs, in a way that is easy to understand and that clearly demonstrates areas of strength and concern.
Parent/Guardian/Stakeholder FAQ Document – Create a Stakeholder FAQ document representing at least 5 of the items you researched and portrayed in the data. Develop this document assuming the reader is a first time visitor to your school. What are the at least five questions you think they would like answered about the school? Use a question/answer format that details the questions and full descriptive answers that are intended to satisfy stakeholders’ questions.
