The assignment involves a review of a movie (a Nigerian movie named The Wildflower) or one of the episodes from Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (Season 23 Episode 22: A Final Caall at Forlini’s Bar or Season 22 Episode 15: Fear and Loathing). You can watch these on: https://watchseries.mx/ and I have uploaded the nigerian movie, The Wildflower, to a dropbox link and it can also be found on netflix.
The review essay will need to address three major themes:
How do theroies and concepts of IPV apply to everyday life and enable us to get a better understanding of the phenomenon?
What are some nuances and contexts of IPV victimization?
How do the course materials inform our understanding of the various means individuals respond to seek help for IPV?
The movie plots, dialogues, and scenes will be used as concrete examples of these three dimensions. However, you will have to bring in the course material to further buttress your point and substantiate any claims you believe were not directly made in the movie. The essay must have at least five references from the course materials. More importantly, the essay must have a theoretical or conceptual framework up on which the paper is built. This theoretical and conceptual framework would normally come after the introductory and/or definition of concepts sections. Your paper will also need to integrate course readings into the review. At least, 5 of the course readings should be cited for the paper. Unless you are citing a data point or statistical information, we expect all the citations to be related to the material in this course.
1. Introduction (5%) – Half a page
This is where the essay introduces the main ideas of the paper. The introduction states the movie that will be reviewed and its link to IPV. You should also mention the theory or theories that would inform your essay. You need a theme for this essay to help you write a coherent essay. The reference to the theme should be implicit, not explicit. That is, you do not have to say, “The theme of this movie review is XYZ…” Your thesis statement (which makes an implicit reference to your theme) and synopsis of the episode can be linked in this section.
2. Theoretical/Conceptual framework (25%) – 1 or 1.5 pages
Many of the theories would focus on materials in Week 3. You are to only describe the theory(ies) or concept(s) in this section! No analysis of the movie at this point! Only provide an example of the theory or theories in the movie; no analysis at this point. Remember, The theory described in this section has to make an implicit reference to the theme of your movie review.
3. The nuances and contexts of IPV victimization (25%) – This examines the contexts and nuances of IPV; ideas, situations and complexities that informs victimization or perpetration of IPV. You can get ideas for this section in Weeks 5, 8, 9, and 10, including the subject of the “uniqueness of DV” in Week 2.
4. How do the course materials inform how we understand the different means survivors respond to or seek help for IPV? (25%) – You will find course materials for this section in Weeks 11 and 13. You are to examine the ideas around how victims seek help or the complexities of helpseeking among victims
* Do not see each of these objectives as a paragraph but as points to be addressed in your analysis. Each of these points can be addressed in 2 or 3 paragraphs. Organization of your ideas is very key! Take scenes, statements, and events in the movie and use them to address each of the three objectives (i.e., sections 2, 3, and 4). You need to analyze at least one scene in each of the sections from 2 to 4. If you can analyze two, that is better. You have to integrate the course materials and movie scenes or conversations. Also, you have to ensure that the theme of the essay runs through these ideas. As you address each objective, you can touch on how the theories or concepts inform the contexts and help-seeking behaviour of IPV. This is what makes your paper intellectual and sociological. Please remember that all these ideas have to run through the theme of the movie review, which does not have to be explicitly stated, but it needs to be implicitly implied.
5. Conclusion (5%) – This is your main takeaway from the movie review. Remember to make an implicit reference to the theme of the essay in this section.
Furthermore:
* Organization and coherence – (5%)
* Grammar (5%)
* Referencing (5%)
You have to cite at least 5 course materials for this essay. The page limit for the essay (from introduction to conclusion) is 7 pages! The reference and name page is not included.
