GUIDELINES: The annotated bibliography should be submitted in
APA style; see the APA tab in A Writer’s Reference. For each source,
you should do the following:
add a proper bibliographic entry (these should be listed in
alphabetical order);
summarize each source to understand its main ideas;
evaluate each source for credibility;
reflect, asking yourself how the source will contribute to your
research project. (Hacker & Sommers, 2018, p. 359)
REQUIRED SOURCES:
Students must include five sources:
Two (2) Articles from Scholarly Journals (Ebscohost or Gale
databases)
Two (2) from a credible online source
One (1) from a newspaper (ProQuest database)
The databases mentioned above can be found under Databases by
Vendor on Calhoun’s library webpage.
Steps for Annotating Each Source
STEP 1-Cite: For bibliographic entries, review the APA section of A
Writer’s Reference, paying particular attention to the following in
APA-4b: 12. Article in a Journal; 14. Article in a Newspaper; 40.
Document from a Website.
STEP 2-Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the
source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book
or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this
article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your
annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. Follow
guidelines in Blackboard for summarizing in this paragraph.
STEP 3-Evaluate: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to
evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other
sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this
source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
STEP 4-Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source,
you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful
to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you
use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you
think about your topic?
Some Obvious Contemporary Issues:
Gender Roles: Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Beauty and the
Beast, Cinderella; Lion King; Maleficent, Mulan
Government Corruption: Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book; Lion
King
Social Class/Poverty: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast; Cinderella;
Jungle Book; Lion King, Mary Poppins
Family/Mothering: A Wrinkle in Time, Aladdin, Cinderella; Lion
King; Maleficent, Mary Poppins
Identity/Stereotypes/Nonconformity: Alice in Wonderland, A
Wrinkle in Time, Beauty and the Beast; Jungle Book; Maleficent,
Mulan, Oz the Great and Powerful
Acceptance: Maleficent, Mary Poppins, A Wrinkle in Time, Beauty
and the Beast
Cultural Diversity: Aladdin, Mulan
These are just a few very broad topics that I came up with. You can
use one as an idea or come up with your own.
FEW notes
1.Your sources should reflect the chosen contemporary
issue, NOT a Disney film.
2.This is NOT an essay. It is like a souped up reference
(bibliography) page which includes annotations for
each entry. Annotations consist of a summary,
evaluation, and assessment.
3.This is organized like a reference page (no title page
or abstract required). Please refer to the sample
annotation on the assignment sheet.
The annotated bibliography should be submitted in APA style; see the APA tab in A Writer’s Reference. For each source, you should do the following:
