Research Paper Topics
You may choose to do one of three types of critical essays over “Hills Like White Elephants:”
(1) A character analysis of a single character or a contrast/comparison of two characters
(2) A theme analysis
(3) An analysis of the use of a literary element
SAMPLE TOPICS (just sample, not required)
Character Analysis- analysis of the two main characters the American and/or Jig
Theme analysis- Gender/control in the conversation, abortion decision
Literary Element Analysis-analysis of symbols, irony, setting… (any of the literary elements we have studied except plot.)
Requirements
MLA style, objective 3rd person essay (no 1st or second person) Researched (not “I think,” “I feel,” “I believe.”
1,500-1,800 words
Must use and cite a minimum of SIX Sources (a) the primary source “Hills Like White Elephants” must be cited in the essay, (b.) and you must use and cite at least a minimum of FIVE secondary sources from the
databases. All sources should be from the databases or the Cengage Gale resources in your lab. (****NOTE You must have at least SIX total sources.)
Each claim must be supported by examples from the primary source and support from secondary sources. I.E. – If you are writing about the setting, you might indicate that Hemingway emphasizes the setting. Then, you would give an example from the primary text. (Hemingway focus on the symbol of the white elephant begins with the title of the short story “Hills Like White Elephants” (75) You would follow up your example by finding and citing a secondary source which supports your claim and comments on its significance. (The article “Hemingway Hills: Symbolism in Hills Like White Elephants” reveals that the white elephant like the unborn child is creates a paradox (Weeks 77).) Continue to point it out and cite it from the text; then support it with a secondary source.
Must be thesis controlled
Must not be a plot summary or I think, I feel, I believe/must be researched/what the critics say
Must be majority paraphrase. NO MORE than 10% quotes. Put things in your own words and cite the paraphrase just as the quote. See rules for citing.
