Term Paper: Every slice of sports content we read, watch, and listen to can be an opportunity to evaluate
ethics and ethical behavior. By this, I mean that ethical issues are constantly emerging as players, coaches,
sporting companies, organizations and fans make decisions related to sports.3
One of the best ways to gain a grasp of these ethical issues is by actually researching these topics, discussing
them and allowing others to read your thoughts. In this class you’ll be asked to ‘publish’ your own ‘articles’
on sports ethics.
You’ll use your own understanding of ethical systems and moral dilemmas in sports to produce analysis
and criticism concerning happenings within the sports ethics landscape, which are relevant to the content of this
course. Each student will be required to develop a proposal, rough draft, and final draft of their ‘articles’ (due
dates are listed on the week’s ‘notes’ in the course schedule), in which they will identify a
topic germane to the field of sports ethics, take a stance on that ethical dilemma, and persuade their
readers that they, in fact, hold the ‘correct’ position.
I expect a rather thorough analysis and critique of issues and developments relevant to sports, ethics, and
society. A more detailed description of what I’m looking for from your term papers, including a rubric, will
be provided on Canvas. Long story short…this should be an exercise in developing your sense of how
ethics and morality operate in your lives, in sports, and in your future careers, as well as honing your
writing and argumentative skills in the process. Have fun with this project, and let your passion guide your
research.
