For this assessment you are required to submit a 2,000-word (+/- 10%) report providing evidence-based recommendations to the Forensic Capability Network, addressing the challenge provided.
Guidance:
You are working as a researcher and have been asked to address a challenge presented to you by the Forensic Capability Network.
The challenge is as follows:
‘’Crime Scene Investigators should be supported in making optimum decisions when attending burglary dwelling scenes’’
Students must produce a 2000-word (+/- 10%) report setting out their evidence-based recommendations for how the Forensic Capability Network could look to address the challenge.
Students must use the following structure for their report:
Introduction (100 max)
A brief generic summary of the purpose of the report. State what the report will cover within this section.
Explaining the importance of the challenge (600 words)
Provide some background information/context to the challenge here, directing this context towards the area or areas in which you have made recommendations in your report.
In this section you must:
Explore who is impacted by this challenge – think about links to artefact one and the wider process
Briefly discuss the impact of the problem on current practice and quality implications
Set out the key area or areas that your recommendations relate to and the relevance of these areas to the challenge. Provide literature to support this
Evidenced-based recommendations (1200 words – approx 600 words per recommendation)
Make two recommendations for approaches that the Forensic Capability Network could take to address the challenge:
These could include one or a combination of the following types of approach:
Ideas informed by the literature (forensic science or wider)
Approaches adopted to combat similar challenges in other domains (which you can cite in the literature). An approach could constitute a range of different things – processes or procedures to put into place, pieces of technology that could be used, management techniques used in other domains as examples
Pieces of experimental work that the Forensic Capability Network could engage in (you could use experimental work to explore the problem more fully or to investigate potential solutions) – if you are going to discuss experimental work then make sure that you are detailed and specific in relation to what should be done.
Tips for some effective recommendations
Be detailed and specific – detail exactly what should the FCN do
Be creative
Make sure that it is clear how the recommendation you have made will help to address the challenge
Your recommendations do not have to completely ‘solve’ the challenge – but they must provide an evidence base that will work towards a solution this can be in relation to a specific aspect of the problem as long as you make sure this is clear
You can suggest novel experimental work (as detailed above). If you do this make sure that you cite an evidence base to support this being a useful activity to address aspects of the challenge
Your recommendations can be linked to each other or may look to address separate aspects of the challenge
You should consider how the FCN would measure that the ideas suggested have had an impact on practice
You must ensure that the approaches that you suggested include citations as appropriate and are informed by relevant literature.
