people addicted to drugs and alcohol only 3,000,00 actually get help.90% of
people fell that they don’t need help” Addiction can cause several health
issues and make your personal life very challenging this disorder affects the
brain and your behavior.

The consequence of addiction is devasting
for everyone in the addicted person circle. This terrible disease addiction
reaches the addicted persons home, work, social life, and society. The play “Sweat” by Lynn Nottage talks about
her characters. Tracey and Brucie who both face addiction after facing some
challenges in their life that turn out to be very traumatic experiences for
them to deal with and they choose to use drugs to deal with their feelings.
The drugs null the hard times for
them only temporary of course but this is a way for Brucie, and Tracy to escape
their reality for a time Brucie, and Tracy both search after that escape time
after time and this is what brings them to deceive their friends, family, and coworker.
Brucie was in a battle against his employer.
Brucie lost his job and turn to heroin to cope. The Play Sweat showcases the addiction. Cynthia
is the wife of Brucie and felt the effect of addiction firsthand “Let me tell
you something once he starts messing with that dope, I don’t recognize the man”

being the drug of choice Brucie addition has a profound affect on his family
life as well as social life. Loved ones has the burden of caring for a family

things that the addicted person is going through all but taking the drugs
themselves. They must live with the addicted person ups and downs.
In the play “Sweat” Brucie character
the father, husband, and Union official figure of the play involvement with
heroin addiction is the worst, his life is ripped apart from families’ members
due to his actions and the desperate and unconceivable things he has done to
the family unit while in his addiction. Addiction
can have changes to the way the brain functions and impairs a person’s ability
to control actions and make reasonable decisions.
In the play one of the inconceivable
things done by Brucie to get drugs for himself is when Cynthia is at the bar
talking to Stan about her life living with someone addicted to drugs. She
states “I go downstairs. My Christmas presents under the tree are gone Stan.
/Get out here. Cynthia. and my fish tank with expensive new tropical fish,
gone” (Nottage17) Bruce has managed to make his family Christmas awful
especially for the children.
This type of behavior is not uncommon for
people addicted to drugs. Addicts will
use the trust of family and friends that are there for them to feed their
addiction by stealing from them and later coming back to say how sorry they are
for the pain they have caused the family. Addiction has been the cause of many families
failing from all walks of life. Addiction is treatable but very hard to overcome
without professional intervention. And the help of family and friends.
Also, in the play Sweat another charter
in the play Tracey turns to drugs Jason a friend of Tracey in the play was away
in jail seeing him upon getting out of jail for the first time stated “I didn’t
believe. Fat Henry when he said you were strung out. TRACEY. Fat Henry needs to
mind his business. It’s for my back pain. Jason Aspirin won’t do? Tracey. Ha,
Ha, Very Funny. You have no Idea. you Have No Idea!” (Nottage 57) Tracey hurt her
back at the old steads factory and coping with the pain he was experiencing
turn to drugs to mange the pain.
These quotes in Sweat also shows how
Tracy is in denial of her addiction Through the charters in the play Brucie and
Tracey will show that circumstances and addiction can happen to anyone. Addiction
is a treatable condition that can be suppressed with an extensive approach involving
a combination of things, such as therapy, medication, and support groups.
