Summative assessment.
This is a two-part assessment incorporating two essays focussing upon assessment and formulation
within mental health care. Having the two essays will ensure students understand they are required
to address both assessment and formulation in equal measure.
Both parts are handed in on the same day, and a pass is required for both components to pass the
module.
The student will choose a service user on which to base both parts of this assignment. The student
will have opportunities to incorporate critical discussion in their chosen approaches to assessment
and formulation with reference to underpinning research and evidence-based recommendations.
In line with NMC guidance confidentiality must be maintained throughout your assessment.
Learning Outcomes:
Part 1 – Critically discuss the important facets of assessment for an
identified mental health service user (50%).
LO3 – Demonstrate a personal perspective and critical viewpoint regarding mental health and
mental health practice.
LO4 – Have an understanding of assessment and the rationale for your chosen assessment
approaches in mental health.
• You will choose a client to base your assessment on.
A brief background will be provided
within the introduction.
• You will discuss the assessment process and what tools you might use. You must include an
evidence base and relate theory to practice.
• You will talk about the therapeutic relationship, building the relationship, barriers, etc.
Again, relating theory to practice.
• You will discuss the Biopsychosocial aspects of the assessment and with the use of evidence,
why this is an important part of the process.
Part 2 – Leading from discussion on your assessment findings from Part 1, critically discuss the
formulation of the service user and underpinning theories that have informed this (50%).
LO1 – Demonstrate knowledge on currently debated paradigms/models around mental health and
mental distress.
LO2 – Critically discuss the concepts of medical and personal recovery.
LO5 – Have an understanding of how recommended mental health interventions are informed by
formulation.
• This part will follow on from the same client that you assessed.
• You will look at different approaches and choose one to use, and explore the theory behind
the approach you choose.
• Discuss the therapeutic relationship and engaging the person in the formulation.
• Discuss how the formulation informs the intervention.
• Summarise the formulation process and your learning using a model of reflection.
