April 3, 2024

Summarize the introduction, purpose, literature review, methods,
results, discussion, and limitations of the study. (See attached doc wiki questions)
Then, discuss the media you have been assigned.  (Media listed below)
Summarize in brief the episode you watched (less than 1/3 of your post should be summary), as well as key characters or situations that exemplified the most apparent tropes you saw (see trope examples in module).
Give an example of how the trope played out, and whether you think the trope represents how things go in real life–sometimes they get it right, sometimes they do it wrong for the sake of entertainment. To support your claim about accuracy, seek out official data relevant to that issue (e.g.
frequency of misconduct, percent of cases actually closed in a given
jurisdiction, number of civil rights violations in a given year, capital
punishment practices, solitary confinement frequency) or the official response to these acts of misconduct, common practices, etc. (how inmate populations are divided, probation practices, prison labor, parenting from prison, jail dynamics, etc.).
What
effect do you think this representation of criminal justice
professionals, victims/survivors/family members, defendants, jurors, and
others has on the viewer?
There
are certainly other effect these shows may have on perceptions the
audience may form about the legitimacy or illegitimacy of jails,
prisons, probation, and correctional staff. Try to explore your thoughts
on what effects this may include, especially erroneous beliefs or
misconceptions.
Also, you should address how the people under supervision and officials were portrayed. Were they good? Bad? Ethical? Did the public, witnesses, suspects view them favorably?
A few notes about reading the article:
Don’t fret
about the kinds of data analysis they did or if you aren’t sure about
what ANOVA, regression, r-squares, etc. are. The main takeaways you want
are going to be in the introduction, literature review, present study,
sample, discussion, and future research/limitations sections. As you
read, think about how your article may relate to the things you recall
seeing on your show or reading about in your classmates’ posts. Ask
yourself why the media may represent sentencing and corrections a
certain way, even with these outcomes on public perception. Were the
sentencing judges, probation officers, correctional staff, and people in
the correctional system represented in a certain light? Did you see a
change in how media produced before and after the influence of social
movements, such as #MeToo and awareness of wrongful conviction and
exonerations? What about portrayals and discussions about sentencing,
jails, prisons, parole, and probation on the news, ‘infotainment’ like
John Oliver and Trevor Noah, and documentaries, compared to fictional
portrayals?
