SUGGESTED ESSAY TOPICS
2,000 word-essay
Answer any one question. The essay is worth 30% of your total grade. The essay is 2,000 words in length. This, of course, does not include the bibliography.
Choice of Essay & Approach
Students are advised to choose a question they are curious and passionate about.
Students can write on a topic from outside this list, but those who choose to do so must first clear the topic of their choice with the instructor. The following elements will be required of any such essay — (a) must fit into the scope of the course, (b) must be viable topic, such as availability of appropriate sources to execute it, and (c) an outline with a bibliography must accompany the proposal.
Wherever possible, it is an effective approach to delimit a given question by focusing an answer on one case or a few cases within that question. This way, one can better marshal the data needed to support an argument and minimize overgeneralization, which blights an argument. You will, however, briefly explain, as a part of the introduction, therationale for your choice of focus. The fewer the cases chosen out of possible cases to be addressed, the stronger the justification needs to be.

In addition:
• You can use any citation method, provided it conforms to a specific style manual and is used consistently throughout the essay.
• You can use the required/recommended texts for the course, but outside sources should form a substantial part, ideally the bulk, of your references.
• There is no maximum number of sources you can consult and cite, but eight seems to be the minimum at this level.
Submission
A few things must be observed, failure of which will cost you marks or outright rejection of your essay.
• Please write the title of the essay you are writing exactly how it appears here.
• Please submit your essay in Microsoft Word Format – no PDF, no Works, no Google Docs, nothing else but Word. I need to use Word’s Track Changes function to mark your paper.
• The file name must be your first and last name, e.g., Jane Doe.
• The essay must be sent as an email attachment, not a link.
• Without an attachment, the essay is as good as not submitted.
