Study Aims:
The study aims to examine what contributes to the
lack of engagement on pupils during storytelling session in kindergarten
setting.

Assessing Current
Challenges:

During story
session evaluations and interactions with teacher
assistants (TA), I have discovered numerous barriers to student involvement, including limited focus, a shortage of participatory aspects in thenarrative, and trouble engaging with ethnically varied topics.
2. Identifying Specific Learning Goals:

Example:
My main focus is to improve pupil involvement and understanding throughout
preschool narrative lessons. I particularly want to assist children in
increasing their capacity to pay attention, engage in conversations, and
reply to storytelling cues. This involves improving proficiency in teaching by analyzing the most recent publications on teaching approaches for current challenges, such as low
language proficiency, behavioral issues, and emotional and cognitive aspects.
3. Developing Tailored Strategies:

To
solve these problems, I want to use multimedia (games for the story)) or
materials for storytelling approaches, such as dolls, costumes, and actions,
to make narratives interesting. Furthermore, I am going to choose multicultural
narratives that relate to the kids’ experiences and cultural backgrounds,
establishing a sense of inclusiveness and engagement, which is using a story
that is short relatable, and appropriate for the pupil’s age and level of
English proficiency.
4. Implementing and Evaluating Interventions:

Throughout story times, I
am planning to carry out the chosen approaches while constantly monitoring
pupil involvement, involvement levels, and reactions to narrative prompts. I
also solicited input from instructors and students by asking questions after
the story session to follow up to assess the efficacy of the treatment.
5. Reflecting and Adjusting:

Following
reflection, I hope to find considerable increase in pupil involvement and
taking part, with pupils excitedly participating in the narratives and
displaying a stronger knowledge of the story elements. Still, I wish to
identify a desire for additional refining, such as adding additional hands-on
tasks to accommodate various methods of learning and interests because
kindergarteners learn better while touching and feeling the objects (Taylor. and Boyer 2020). The author further stated “Making and other types of hands-on play can
help youngsters develop new ways of thinking, gain confidence and
resourcefulness, link new and familiar objects, and increase their capacity
to integrate ideas and experiences.”

This is to investigate how engaged children are by
taking notes to see if they are listening or interacting with the story.
Example: in the beginning of the lesson, I will check behaviour if they
are quiet, paying attention or respond to the material that I have prepared
for the lesson. This will help on areas to improve and bring solutions on the
next lesson.

The study was motivated by observations of three
children at the K3 level (5-6 years old) during storytelling lessons, who
consistently displayed a lack of engagement. Despite efforts to capture their
attention, these children would often resort to playing or attempting to
distract others during the lesson. Furthermore, after the class when asked to
role-play the story that was told, they demonstrated difficulty in
remembering and acting out the narrative. These findings revealed a
disturbing tendency of disengage during narrative sessions, giving me the
need to study the underlying causes of this conduct. By conducting
observations to measure the current level of learner involvement, this study
hopes to acquire understanding of the unique issues these children encounter
and develop focused ways to improve their involvement as well as
comprehension during narrating events.
