Students will write two 3-5 page papers on a topic of interest within the course. The topic
can be any of the below options or a topic approved by your Professor ahead of time (at least
10 days prior to the due date).
Topic 1: Ecological Systems Perspectives – Analyze the ecological systems
perspective in community psychology, exploring how individual, interpersonal,
community, and societal factors interact together to influence overall well-being and
behavior. Please use case examples to discuss the implications of this perspective
for understanding and address complex social issues including poverty,
environmental justice and mental health.
Topic 2: Intersectionality and Social Justice – Explore the concept of
intersectionality in the context of community psychology through examining how
various dimensions of identity (e.g. gender, race, socioeconomic status, etc.)
intersect to shape individuals’ experiences of privilege and oppression. With a
critical eye, discuss the implications of intersectionality for addressing and
understanding social justice issues within diverse communities.
Topic 3: Community Empowerment and Social Change – Discuss the role
community empowerment plays in fostering social change. Drawing on theoretical
frameworks as well as empirical research, critically evaluate the effectiveness of
strategies for empowering communities to promote well-being and address social
justice issues
Topic 4: Community Resilience and Collective Efficacy – Explore the concepts of
collective efficacy and community resilience within community psychology. Using
empirical research and case studies, critically evaluate the factors that contribute to
the role of collective action and community resilience in promoting community well-
being. Discuss ways community psychologists can help foster collective efficacy
and resilience through strengths-based approaches as well as community
mobilization strategies.
Topic 5: Cultural Competence and Diversity – Analyze the importance of cultural
competence and diversity in community psychology practice. Drawing on empirical
evidence and theoretical frameworks, examine the opportunities and challenges of
working with diverse communities. Discuss strategies for promoting cultural
humility, equity, and inclusion in interventions, research and community
partnerships within the field of community psychology.
