April 29, 2024

Students will write a proposal to identify the subject /issue/ topic they will be working with for the semester. This will be submitted to, approved, and graded by the instructor.
Refer to the textbook Everyone’s an Author: Chapter 18—Making a Proposal/ A Roadmap (pp.391-395).
Throughout the semester, you will focus on one topic/issue. Here are the criteria:
It must be a 21st-century social issue that allows you to advocate and must make an impact on a community–Becoming a Global Citizen. The topic may be local, national, or international (global). The issue/ topic that you select must lend itself to expanding to further research, both primary and secondary research, and support your research questions.
For this discussion, post your topic ideas as an extension of the discussion you included in the Introductions.
Answer in this format: (MLA or APA style acceptable)
Write a short summary of why you feel this is a good topic to advocate. (2-3 sentences) Provide a potential thesis statement.
Include the big topic: (example: terrorism); Narrowed topic: (domestic terrorism in the U.S.)
Then answer the following: Who is the topic for? What is the issue? When did the issue begin? Where is the issue most fluid? Why should people care? How is the issue or problem going to be resolved?
Things to think about as you move beyond the brainstorming session:
A precise description of the problem (p.373);
A clear and compelling solution to the problem (p.375);
Evidence that your solution will address the problem (p.377);
Acknowledgment of other possible solutions p.378);
A statement of what your proposal will accomplish (p.380). (Adapted from Everyone’s an Author, pp. 373).
Use the Writing A Proposal/ A Roadmap (pp. 391-395) to begin brainstorming and flushing out your proposal assignment for Module One: Community Engagement Proposal
Review the YouTube video for how to write a Research Proposal under Web Resources, as well as the Purdue OWL handout, and Review the Research Questions handout.
The topic you select is the topic you will research and analyze for the four weeks of the course semester. You may make adjust the issue/topic as needed throughout the semester. Make sure it is connected to “Becoming a Global Citizen.” It must show that it is an issue/ topic you can be proactive in and contribute to society or a community as a whole.
If you have not done so, review the video from the founder of “Becoming a Global Citizen.” The founder provides the mission statement of the organization. This video is located under Introductions.
***Note: This is the start of the course curriculum module layout: Module 1: Community Engagement Proposal.
Community Engagement Proposal: Students will explore issues and concerns in their communities (home, place of worship, civic, work, school) and will identify a problem connected with the community that they wish to study. Students will explain how their own interests, goals, and values align with the organization or agency’s mission. This paper will take the form of a proposal or memo.
Remember to refer to Everyone’s an Author: Chapter 1—Making a Proposal/ A Roadmap
As a reminder, make sure to revise and complete the more extended version, Module 1: Community Engagement Proposal, at a later date during Module 3.
Scaffolding: Brainstorming resources—Identify problems
The Use of AI:
You will complete the scaffolding for the topic proposal. Follow these steps.
1.Write an initial draft on your own. Save it.
2.Below the initial draft, use Grammarly to revise what you have written.
3.After the completion of the scaffolding, write a short reflection. See the guidelines below.
Provide a short disclaimer and a reflection at the top of the submission stating the following:
This submission [label work] was aided by AI technology.
Include a short reflection of no less than 200 words. In this reflection, you will include the following discussion.
What AI technology did you use? (example: Grammarly, Microsoft Editor, etc…)
How did you use the technology? Describe. (For example: I used AI technology, [Grammarly], to help with sentence structure to help revise, edit, and reword sentences).
How different was the original section and then the revised version? Provide an example-original / revised versions.
How was your experience with using AI technology? Illustrate.
Will you consider using this AI program? Why or why not?
Is there anything else you want to share with your instructor?
