Students shall select one of the Dilemma Questions from the list below to use as the foundation for their Choose Your Ethics Paper. Using the question as your starting point, you will create a scenario that where an actor must work through the situation to reach a resolution. You will use any additional details or facts to explain why this is a moral or ethical dilemma. Following this explanation, you will analyze and resolve the situation using your picked school. You will find your school in iCollege and if you have any questions about what school it is, please reach out to me.
After analyzing and resolving the situation using the picked school, you pick a completely different school to work through the same situation again. You’ll explain the school before discussing how it could work in place of your picked school. After explain the school and why you picked it, you will present a clear resolution that it supports that resolves the original ethical/moral dilemma.
The school will be one of the following:
(1) Aristotle’s Nicomachean ethics (virtue ethics)
(2) Bentham and Mill’s Utilitarianism
(3) Kant’s deontological Ethical Formalism
(4) Natural Law of Cicero, Aquinas and Rousseau
(5) Situational Ethics.
Scenario Questions:
(1) A police officer sees a car speeding down the highway and pulls it over. Should they give a ticket, arrest them, or let them go?
(2) A prosecutor is handed a case and must decide whether to take it to trial, offer a plea deal, or dismiss the charges. What should they do?
(3) A correctional officer is offered a bribe by an inmate. Should they take it or report it?
***You will need to add any additional details to help flesh out these questions to make your scenario and support it being an ethical dilemma that needs resolving.***
The submission should include:
(1) Dilemma Question & Explanation: What question are you using for this paper? You can add details as needed to help flesh out your paper, and using the assigned school to explain the ethical situation that the actions find themselves currently trying to resolve. You’re explaining the why and how this question forces an ethical dilemma.
(2) The Analysis & Resolution: You are explaining the assigned school and using it as a lens to help you analyze the current situation to find a resolution. You need to explain the school, how it works to help resolve the situation, and present a clear and definitive resolution that resolves the situation.
(3) Alternatives: After reviewing the dilemma, pick at least one other school that might help you resolve this situation. Explain the school and discuss whether it would have worked better than your assigned school. What resolution would it have produced if you used it instead? If you don’t think any other school would have worked or worked better, you need to defend that choice here as well.
(4) Compare & Discuss: This last section has you comparing what you found by working through this situation twice (i.e., once with the assigned school & ones with an alternative of your choosing). Did you find the same or different resolution? Explain which one and why you think that happened. Did you find that one worked better or worse than the other? If so, why? Think critically about not only why you picked your alternative school, but how it works with or in contrast to the assigned school. You’re explaining what you learned doing this – so, explore and discuss.
Maximum length of assignment including Dilemma question and analysis is three (3) typewritten pages submitted as a WORD DOCUMENT. [Note that per the syllabus all work shall be double-spaced, with 1” margins on all sides and in a 12-point serifed font such as Times New Roman]
