1-First Interview “Michael: Scenario 1”
NARRATOR: Michael is a fourth-grade student who recently moved from Nebraska to California with his family, and seems to be struggling with the change.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Hey, Michael. How’s it going?
MICHAEL: OK, I guess.
FEMALE SPEAKER: You enjoying California, all the sun and warm weather? I’m sure it’s different than what you’re used to.
MICHAEL: Yeah, the weather is OK. I miss the snow in Nebraska, though. FEMALE SPEAKER: I can see that. We don’t see snow in LA.
MICHAEL: Yeah, I wish it did snow. Then, maybe we could have brought my dog.
FEMALE SPEAKER: You had a dog in Nebraska? What kind?
MICHAEL: A husky. His name is Macio. My mom said he wouldn’t do well in California. It’s too warm here. He’s staying with my auntie in Nebraska now.
FEMALE SPEAKER: I guess you’re pretty lonely then, here without your pal Macio, huh?
MICHAEL: Yeah, I really miss having a dog. I wish we could go back for Macio.
2-First Interview “Lucille: Scenario 2”
NARRATOR: Lucille, the dean of students at a prestigious university, has been in the media spotlight due to a cheating scandal on campus. One of the faculty members in question is a personal friend of hers.
FEMALE SPEAKER: I just don’t know how much longer I can take this. The pressure, it’s coming at me from all sides. My friend and colleague is accused of helping a student cheat and thinks I had something to do with exposing her. She thinks I threw her under the bus to save face. Meanwhile, my colleagues think I’m part of a cover up. Everything I say and do is scrutinized. How am I supposed to get out of this with my friendship and reputation intact?
FEMALE SPEAKER: I know this must be very stressful for you. What’s your greatest fear?
FEMALE SPEAKER: I’m afraid my students will lose faith in me. It’s taken me so long to gain their trust and respect. And to lose it over something I have nothing to do with, it’s very unsettling. How do I get them back on my side?
